Manager of Flight Safety

This position is responsible for the development and ongoing maintenance of a comprehensive flight safety program that includes participation from aviation, maintenance, medical staff members, and communication specialists. Within this general framework, this position is accountable for the following functions:

  • Develop and maintain safety-related education for Care Flight staff.
  • Develops maintenance & maintains safety-related outreach training for customers / partners across Care Flight’s service region.
  • Maintains currency on industry trends in aviation safety management and accident prevention.
  • Manages employees as assigned.
  • Development and promotion of effective Safety Management System (SMS) for Care Flight ground and air operations.
  • Develops and maintains safety incident reporting and data processing through safety reporting software program or similar programs.
  • Responsible for timely assignment, investigating, contributing, and appropriate loop closure of submitted Reporting Forms in safety reporting software.
  • Develops benchmark standards for tracking and reporting of safety program outcomes and achievements.
  • Provides presentations at staff meetings and New Employee Orientation (NEO).
  • Develop safety-related strategies, measurable benchmarks, and regular communications with Base Safety Representatives (BSRs).
  • Conducts root cause analysis of all reported safety occurrences (operational, aviation, clinical) and assists management in action plan development for education safety concern resolution.
  • Conducts safety audits of Care Flight operations to ensure compliance with CAMTS and other agency requirements.
  • Maintains currency of all CAMTS safety-related policies and procedures.
  • Regularly reports identified trends, data, and corrective actions to the Executive Director of Care Flight.
  • Makes sound decisions based upon the STAR CARE decision model.
  • Chairs the Care Flight Safety Committee and is responsible for assigning tasks, maintaining follow-up, and facilitating loop closure on safety-related items moved through the committee.
  • Maintain Injury & Illness Prevention Plan and Workplace Violence Prevention Plan in accordance with Nevada and CalOSHA requirements.
  • Initial and annual training and record keeping related to Exposure Control and Respiratory Protection Plan in accordance with Nevada and CalOSHA regulations for Aerosol Transmittable Diseases (ATD).
  • Provides quarterly reporting to REMSA / Care Flight CQI Steering Committee and Care Flight Management to assist in accomplishment of organizational goals.
  • Maintains a close relationship with Air Methods and Life Flight Networks’ Regional Safety Officer and Program Aviation Manager on safety issues and crew resource management programs.
  • Coordinates communication between vendors, base safety representatives, and Care Flight medical staff relating to safety issues and education.
  • Maintains a professional, collaborative relationship with Care Flight & REMSA staff and management.
  • Conducts and coordinates audits, PAIP training drills, and outreach safety education to REMSA-Care Flight employees, partnering agencies, hospital staff, and citizens groups.
  • Pursues continued education related to accountabilities.
  • Responsible for maintaining and keeping current the Care Flight Post Accident Incident Plan (PAIP) manual.
  • Responsible for maintaining and updating the Care Flight Safety Training Manual.
  • Accepts other duties as assigned to promote goals and objectives of Care Flight department.
  • Functions as part of the Care Flight management team and attends regular Care Flight management meetings.
  • Consults and coordinates with other safety professionals within the organization to ensure cohesive and consistent safety policies and procedures.
  • In coordination with other members of the Care Flight management team, supports a positive team environment, where employees are proud of being a member and are supportive of one another through open communication, standards and recognition.
  • Supports the company’s Leadership Code of Conduct through one’s own actions and encourages the same from peers.
  • Able to travel and work outside of regular schedule to facilitate the goals of the department and REMSA-Care Flight organization.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications/ Experience Requirements

  • Minimum of three (3) years HEMS or Fixed Wing flight experience within the last 4 years.
  • Bachelor’s degree in applicable field of study or equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
  • Formal training in safety is required.
  • Disciplined and mature individual possessing the ability to engage in difficult communication with Care Flight staff and management when required.
  • Strong motivational and leadership skills required.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills required.
  • Must possess an intimate knowledge of Federal, State, and local regulations pertaining to Air Medical Transport operations
  • Must be able to obtain a strong working knowledge of REMSA-Care Flight company policies and procedures within six (6) months of accepting position.
  • Prior management or supervisory experience preferred.
  • Prior safety experience within an EMS setting preferred.
