Essential Items to Include in Your First Aid Kit

Northern Nevada and Northeastern California are full of beautiful, exciting places to explore. Before you head out for a camping trip, hike or day on the lake, make sure you are prepared and have a well-equipped first aid kit. You can purchase pre-packaged kits or assemble one yourself, suggestions on what to include are mentioned below. You can download a First Aid app from the American Red Cross.   

What to prepare for in your first aid kit:

  • Allergic reactions, dehydration, insect bites
  • Minor burns and blisters
  • Sprains/Strains/Fractures
  • Cuts, abrasions, puncture wounds

Some things to have in your kit:

  • Epipen (Rx only) or Benadryl
  • CPR mask/breathing barrier
  • Non-latex gloves
  • Scissors
  • Thermometer
  • Sterile water
  • Splint
  • Whistle
  • Antibiotic ointment
  • Tweezers
  • Gauze
  • Bandages of various sizes
  • Antiseptic wipes
  • First aid guide or First Aid app on your phone
  • Cold compress
  • Paper and a permanent marker
  • Pain relievers
  • Small pocket knife
  • Sunblock

Other things to have with you or in your kit:

  • Extra medications for several days
  • Emergency phone numbers
  • A list of your medications

Things to consider about your location:

  • How close is the nearest hospital?
  • Will your cell phone work on the trail or at your campsite?
  • Is there a ranger station, campground office or lifeguard nearby?
